2008: A bit oaky, but a good year

2008 saw a black man get elected to the Presidency (heck yeah!). Gas prices peaked at a “do I really need to drive to get toilet paper?” price and was brought down to a “sure, I’ll pick you up from LAX” price. We went into a recession (gasp! Like no one knew that was coming). And the gay population legalized marriage in California, only to have that right unjustifiably revoked.

There was a pregnant man (though not really, because he used to be a woman), a rocker won American Idol (woot!), and a third-grader became mayor for a day in Monroe County, TN.

It was a year of regrettable trends: the porn mustache (or pornstache), the in-your-face opulence, the B-listers in bedazzled outfits on Dancing With the Stars, the Kanye West shutter glasses, the celebrity perfumes, the bondage-esque hooker heels, and Sarah Palin.

We also played the name abomination game with new gems like Nahla, Honor, Sunday, Zuma Nesta Rock, Bronx Mogley, Birdie, Sage, and Tripp (born to Bristol Palin (which fits nicely with the rest of the names in the family: Track, Trig, Willow, and Piper (a name I actually like))). What’s the record for the most parenthesis in one sentence?

2008 was also a year of great (and not so great) movies, television, and music. I have taken the liberty of making a list of my favourites (and least favourites) in these categories. Keep in mind that this list only includes things that I actually saw or heard. I’m sure there are many other great things that debuted in 2008 that I did not, unfortunately, get to experience:

  1. Oh, my love, so much to say! Here’s as much as I can remember to say at the moment:
Sadly, I haven’t seen any of the movies on your list (it’s been a very untheater year for me….not having a theater in my college’s town doesn’t help (srrrsly, what’s up with that? There are two colleges in this town and there’s still nothing. Even a dollar theater would make bank)). Anyway, I really want to watch Dark Knight and Burn After Reading.
Secondly, excellent job on the music. I was going to go through and applaud you for each of the bands/artists in your top 5 that I love….then I realized I love all of them. So I’ll just say: all of your top 5 are fantastic and I give you a thumbs up. Still haven’t heard Britney Spears’ new album, but I’m not against it (since I’m trying not to be against things I haven’t even tried…that being said, it’s really hard to not be anti-Twilight, though. I promise I’ll read them eventually, I just want to keep my distance as long as I can).

    Anyway. LOVE.

  2. You are definitally allowed to be anti-Twilight, Rachel. Distance is a good idea, especially when it comes to the movie. Sorry, Erin. :)

As expected, I haven’t listened to any of your musical selections. I do need to branch out more, don’t I?

I have a movie suggestion for you… Milk. I haven’t seen it but I’ve heard good things from reliable sources. If you haven’t seen it, we should go together asap.
